John Zumwalt III

John B. Zumwalt, III, P.E., has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer  (CEO) of The PBSJ Corporation since 2005. He served as Chairman and CEO  of PBS&J, chief subsidiary of The PBSJ Corporation, from 2005-2007, and President from 2000-2005.

Mr. Zumwalt joined PBS&J as an entry level engineer in 1973 and has served in numerous technical and management roles within PBS&J, including the Director of Civil Engineering, then Chief Operating Officer, and then President of the company. Under his leadership, PBS&J earned national recognition, including top-10 rankings on CE News’ Best Engineering Firms to Work For two consecutive years, the coveted Stevie Award for Human Resources, the Cutting Edge Award from the Miami Chamber of Commerce, and a position on the Hot Firm 2004 list of fastest growing engineering firms by Zweig White Associates.

Mr. Zumwalt is Past President and Director of the Florida Engineering Society (FES), Past President of the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE), and a Founder of the FES/FICE Leadership Institute. He is an FES Fellow, has been recognized for his outstanding service to the engineering profession, and was awarded the prestigious Governor A.W. Gilchrist Award for public service. He is an alumnus of Leadership Florida, the FES/FICE Leadership Institute, and Leadership PBS&J.

Mr. Zumwalt is a member of the Florida Council of 100, currently chairing its Growth Management Task Force. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, chairing its Coalition for Affordable Living in Florida. In 2006, he received the Chairman’s Award from the Florida Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his business leadership in Florida. He is also a Director and Past Chair of the Florida Chamber Foundation’s Board of Trustees and serves on the Executive Committee of Florida Tax Watch, chairing its Center for a Competitive Florida. He has served on the  Board of the Tampa Bay Partnership has served on the Board of Directors of Enterprise Florida.

In Focus magazine honored him with its South Florida Achievers Award, and he co-authored of a book on leadership with Dr. Mike Lillibridge. He was featured in the cover story, “The Leadership Generation,” in Smart Business magazine in November 2005.

Mr. Zumwalt graduated from the University of Rhode Island (URI) in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering, and he was inducted into the URI Engineering Hall of Fame in 2004. He is a licensed professional engineer in Florida.
